Approach
The ability of this medium to reproduce thousands of different tonal transitions surpasses many other photographic printing processes. Photogravure plates can be printed on a wide variety of paper and other materials. Individual prints can be produced, but also entire editions and print runs. In the end, it is a handcrafted process that does not rule out slight variations - creating unique pieces. Various experimental projects, including Chine-Collé, multi-plate printing, and hand-coloring, are also possible.
There are two options for collaboration: Either you come to the studio and we work together, or you send me your images and we work via Zoom and shared screen. The first option is preferred because printing together on-site is where the real fun begins and the creative process can bear fruit.
During test printing, we try the printing plate with different colors or techniques to achieve the result you desire. This is the most important aspect of printing. However, many do not intend to have more than one print made from a plate, which is perfectly fine but not recommended.
Others want to see their images in varying tones of black or in actual color inks. Some want to see what the image looks like with or without the plate bevel. Still others want to see their work on different types of paper, from warm to bright white papers.
For this reason, the costs for collaborative fine art printing in the studio, which can involve numerous necessary test prints, are calculated solely on the basis of material costs (ink, paper, etc.) plus an hourly rate from the start of the work to its completion. Prices for artist prints and final prints on request.
The second option is to commission the studio to make prints. Here too, prices and possible sizes for test prints and final prints are available on request.

Photogravure plates
photogravure.studio uses an innovative process that uses professional Epson inkjet printers with original Epson ink and Toray flexographic printing plates from the industry. The grains in the image cast microscopic shadows on the plate surface, while the rest of the plate hardens through exposure. When the plate is washed out with water, the unexposed shadows dissolve and form microscopic indentations, so-called "cups". Depending on their depth, these indentations absorb different amounts of printing ink during the printing process, which enables a more extensive color gradation than with any other printing technique.
If you need professionally produced photogravure plates for your printing project, please feel free to get in touch. You deliver the image as you like it on your screen and save it with an embedded profile. photogravure.studio produces the plate either to send it to your studio for printing, or we print it together in my studio.
Within the maximum plate size, you can choose whether the plate should be cropped to the image or whether a plate margin (unprinted margin around the image) should be inserted, as can be seen in the photo (approx. 1cm) bottom right. A plate margin creates a border of unprinted paper around the image, surrounded by an indentation in the paper.
